A WOMAN has died and two people are being treated in hospital after a house fire broke out in a council property in Old Craighall in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 43-year-old woman was taken to St John's Hospital, Livingston, but died from her injuries.

A man, aged 77 and a woman, aged 76, are being treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Police Scotland said they were investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out in the block of four council flats on Old Craighall Road, early Sunday.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the property shortly after 2.30am on Sunday.

Crews rescued three people from the ground floor flat and gave them oxygen and burns treatment as they waited for ambulances to arrive on scene.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "One female casualty was taken to St John’s Hospital where she sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time."

A joint investigation between Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland is taking place to establish the cause of the fire.

Today the ground floor flat's windows were boarded up as investigations continued into the circumstances behind the blaze.

Bouquets of flowers had been tied to the garden fence.

East Lothian Council confirmed the address was one of their residences.

A spokesperson said: "There is little we can say about the fire at the moment as it is the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

"We would like to extend our sympathy to family and friends and will do everything we can to support our tenants."
