ANGRY commuters lashed out at ScotRail on Wednesday morning after the North Berwick to Edinburgh train turned up late and full at Musselburgh, with an empty carriage locked – just over a week after commuters at the station were unable to board another overcrowded morning train.

Dozens of people were waiting on the platform on Wednesday when the train, which had been due at 8.13am, pulled in at the station nearly 20 minutes late.

However, they were left frustrated when an empty carriage was discovered to be locked and the two which were operational were both unable to take any more commuters.

Social media site Twitter was flooded with comments from furious travellers who found themselves left behind at the station, with one claiming as many as 200 people had been waiting for the train.

East Lothian MSP Iain Gray tweeted ScotRail demanding an explanation after he received numerous complaints from people who were unable to get to their work in time.

ScotRail told the Courier the empty carriage had been locked because the door was faulty and apologised to customers who were left behind at the station.

A spokeswoman for ScotRail said: “We apologise to the customers who were unable to board the train at Musselburgh. One carriage had to be closed for safety reasons and is now at Haymarket depot for inspection.”

Passengers waiting for the train at Musselburgh received early warnings of a problem from those already on the packed train as it left Prestonpans.

One commuter tweeted: "I'll be stunned if anyone can squeeze on at Musselburgh. The aisles are packed, only two carriages in use."

Another tweeted from the Musselburgh platform: "Feel sorry for conductor having to explain to about 200 in Musselburgh they can't get on."

While another told ScotRail: "Your contempt for the people who use the East Lothian line continues to plumb the depths. Chaos at Musselburgh this morning."

It is the second week running that passengers at Musselburgh have been unable to board a train heading into the Capital at rush hour because it was full when it arrived in the town, meaning commuters were unable to get to work on time.

There have been calls for an additional service to be introduced to help people get into Edinburgh for 9am and last week ScotRail admitted to the Courier the situation was "frustrating".

But they insist plans to extend the platform at North Berwick next year will allow for longer trains to use the line.
