More than 20 staff from Musselburgh Racecourse gave up their time to help a local family centre during Give and Gain Day.

The volunteer initiative, which encourages workers around the world to help their communities, saw the staff head to Olivebank Child and Family Centre in the town to give their garden a makeover.

The centre supports vulnerable children and their families in the Honest Toun and East Lothian and racecourse management, support staff and ground staff headed there earlier this month for the day.

They helped with development work on the centre’s garden area, the resurfacing of paths, painting, weeding, planting and the installation of a children’s water feature.

Assisted by Business in the Community, which created the garden area from designs drawn by an East Lothian play specialist, the racecourse provided the raw materials and labour and the end result was racing-themed soft play features, a large colourful mural and the design and building of the water installation.

Musselburgh Racecourse commercial manager Sarah Montgomery said: “Give and Gain Day was an excellent opportunity for us to help Olivebank Child and Family Centre, which is a superb asset to the local community.

“It gave our staff a chance to put something back in to the community and is part of a wider strategy which we have undertaken to step up our commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“Another bonus is that British Racing is keen to build longer-term community engagement and, as always, Musselburgh Racecourse is keen to lead from the front.

“We hope Olivebank got as much out of Give and Gain Day as we did and we hope all the visiting families enjoy the changes made to the garden area and grounds.” Sherlene Weir of Olivebank Child and Family Centre said they had been delighted by the support.

She said: “We are extremely grateful to the team of volunteers from Musselburgh Racecourse.

“The improvements to our existing garden will encourage lots of fun and learning, contributing to good emotional memories for all our children who attend the centre.” More than 20 staff from Musselburgh Racecourse gave up their time to help a local family centre during Give and Gain Day.
