A PROMINENT social venue in Haddington looks no closer to re-opening after shutting its doors last summer.

Haddington Conservative Club first opened almost 30 years ago.

However, members of the Market Street club took the decision in August to shut the club down due to problems with finances.

A further meeting was held in the run-up to Christmas, where it was decided that the clubrooms and its bar and restaurant –which was open to the public – should remain closed for the time being.

Morag Gavins, secretary of the club, said a decision on the future of the club now lay with herself, chairman Neil Page and vice-chairman Christopher Laing, with a meeting lined up for next week.

She said: “We are having to look into several different positions.

“People know it is shut and we really have to look into getting something sorted.

“We have not had a meeting this year but we certainly would keep everybody up to date with what is happening. It’s a big decision and it is left to us to deal with it.

“Hopefully, we manage to get it up and running some time but it is one of the things where a lot of places are closing down due to [lack of] funds.” Last August, a notice on the window of the premises read: “Please note the future of the club is due to be considered at a Special General Meeting to be held at the end of September, and the club’s facilities are not currently open.

“The decision to close for a period was taken following the outcome of the Special General Meeting held on August 23.

“All members will be notified of the date of the Special General Meeting and proposals at least 14 days before the date.” The club is home to about 160 members but just 35 turned out for the Special General Meeting.
