A LOVING mum has smashed her fundraising target by a massive £2,500.

Lorraine Thompson was among thousands lining up at Edinburgh’s Big Fun Run in Holyrood Park earlier this month.

The 29-year-old took part to aid a cause very close to her heart, after her 21-month-old son Alistair passed away in February last year.

Lorraine, who works at Haddington’s Post Office, was happy to do her bit for the Scottish Cot Death Trust (SCDT).

She said: “Alistair was never far from my mind.

“His twin brother James came to watch us with his granny. It was really nice he was there as well.” Lorraine set herself a fundraising target ahead of the five-kilometre fun run.

She said: “We’ve raised just over £3,000.

“Our original target was £500 – it has just gone totally crazy.” In February last year, Lorraine was at home with the 21-month-old twins.

She had checked on them at midnight and 4am before her partner Gary made the awful discovery at 7.30am.

The mum of three previously admitted she was “completely ignorant” to cot death before Alistair passed away.

Now, she is getting ready to hand over the money – a whopping 600 per cent above her original target – to SCDT.

Lorraine added: “I just wanted to do something worthwhile and I was just trying to make a bit of a difference.” Entrants in the fun run could compete for more than two dozen different charities, ranging from Macmillan Cancer Support, Asthma UK and Stroke Association to Parkinson’s UK and the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.

Lorraine said: “There were lots of folk out cheering and it was really upbeat.” Lynne Mackenzie, community fundraiser from SCDT, was “blown away” by the fundraising total and described it as “a lovely tribute to her beautiful son, Alistair”.

She said: “We appreciate all of Lorraine’s hard work raising much-needed funds, at what is a difficult time in her life. The trust is the only charity in Scotland dealing with the issue of cot death and with a child dying every nine days, our work is far from over. “We rely on the Scottish public to support our potentially life saving services and to ensure we can support the many families who are devastated by the loss of a child suddenly and unexpectedly.” To make a donation go to justgiving.com/Lainysparkles
