A FORMER mill building could become home to East Lothian Amateur Boxing Club.

The club, which was founded four years ago, is based on Haddington’s Mill Wynd.

Now, it could move into No.3 and 4 Cheviot House on the street, with new plans lodged with East Lothian Council.

Callum Colquhoun, chairman of the club, was hopeful of seeing the club in their new home by the end of the month, if plans get the green light from the local authority.

Currently, the club has 16 members, with a further 30 that use the facility to keep fit.

No changes would be made to the outside of the building, but inside it would be transformed from a former mill building into a boxing gym.

Callum, who works as a community warden, said: “The intention is for the club to expand.

“I want to try to include more of the community and we are just trying to expand the club.

“That’s why we are starting the junior group and we’re thinking about an over-40s group on a Saturday morning.” Ladies’ classes could also be started, while a Muay-Thai (a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques) club could also use the building.

Callum told the Courier the plans would see one side of the building dedicated to a keep fit area, with the other side set up for boxing.

“There will be two boxing rings and about 20 punch bags,” he said.

“It will be a good working area for all the boxers. We will concentrate one side for the boxing and one side for fitness. On that side it will be an open studio with mirrors, chin-up bars, a hurdle to jump over, weights and skipping ropes.”
