Fish going back to bare bones
HADDINGTON rocker Fish has promised to go back to the "bare bones" of songwriting as he works on his forthcoming album.
The former Marillion star, 52, who is currently playing at intimate club venues around the UK as part of his FishHeads Club tour, is due to go into the studio later this year to record 'A Feast of Consequences'.
The album is mooted for release in 2011, and Fish has promised a collection of songs with a "healthy energy" around them.
The Dalkeith-born star has released nine studio albums as a solo artist, and had a number of hits in the 1980s as singer with Marillion.
'A Feast of Consequences' will be the follow-up to 2007's critically-acclaimed '13th Star'.
Fish - real name Derek Dick - said: "I decided the FishHeads Club tour would provide a great opportunity to reinvestigate my approach to song writing by starting from the bare bones of songs and building on that rather than depending on the studio environment as a base to create.
"It's going to be a very loose and flexible project with sporadic gigging interspersed with writing periods rather than huge clumps of dedicated time where writing can get bogged down and touring becomes mundane. This way we should be able to maintain a healthy energy."
The singer is also set to release an "autobiography and travelogue" entitled 'Dear Derek', about the same time as the album is released - including details of his two failed marriages.
"I started writing the book about a year ago soon after I got married," he revealed.
"The substance of the book has a lot to do with relationships and how they have affected my life and shaped who I am today. Ironically, while I was writing, the marriage disintegrated and my wife left me just after Christmas."
The rocker, who appears at Glasgow's The Arches club next Sunday (August 8), said it has been "brilliant" to be back on tour. He appeared at a German festival with '70s pop icon Leo Sayer this month.
"I did a couple of festivals out in Germany and it's just an acoustic trio I'm playing with," he told the Courier.
"The fans are absolutely loving it over here, we're having a good time.
"A couple of weeks back, I was asked to play with Leo Sayer and Chris Thompson. We are all old friends from years back and every now and then we get together with different backing bands."
And the 6ft 5in. musician - who earlier this month starred on popular gardening programme The Beechgrove Garden - has revealed he is planning an event at St Mary's Parish Church, Haddington, in September.
However, he is keeping tight-lipped until more details are confirmed.
"I'm looking to try and line up something at St Mary's in September," he added. "I'm trying to tie it in with a local project."
