A SWAN was injured after allegedly being attacked by a dog near the River Tyne in Haddington.
Animal charity Scottish SPCA was called out to the Waterside Bistro, beside the River Tyne, last Tuesday at about 7pm.
Kenny Greenan witnessed the attack and told the Courier: “There was a Shar Pei dog off its lead.
“All of a sudden there was a scream. The dog appeared to have a hold of the swan.
“It went on for maybe 10 minutes and I eventually jumped the wall and got a hold of the dog – it had the swan’s foot in its mouth.
“By this point it had been a fairly sustained attack and the swan’s foot was hanging the wrong way.
“The man who was with the dog by this point was in the water and the dog must have recognised him as he went off with him – the woman was screaming that the swan was going to kill her dog.”
Mr Greenan, who lives at the town’s golf course, said that Jack Findlay, who runs the Waterside Bistro alongside his brother James, phoned the Scottish SPCA, who attended a short time later.
Erika Jackman, Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer, said: “We were alerted to an injured swan at Waterside Bistro last Tuesday.
“The swan had a limp, which we would have liked to examine further; however, we have not yet been able to catch him.
“We will continue to monitor the swan regularly.”
