HE MAY not have travelled from “deepest, darkest Peru” but Haddington now has its very own famous bear.

‘Haddington Bear’ has been launched to tie in with the town celebrating 700 years since the Bruce Charter – the oldest document in the East Lothian archives.

Although it is known that Haddington had been a burgh for nearly 200 years previously, the charter is being used as the base for dozens of events throughout the year.

The cuddly bear, which is wearing a ‘Haddington 700’ jumper, is on sale at businesses throughout the town and the John Gray Centre.

Frances Wright, from The Malt Kiln and chairwoman of Haddington Community Development Trust (HCDT), said: “I think it is a great thing.

“Anything that brings the community together is great.”

Already, several events have been held in the town, with several groups and organisations coming together.

Plans are also being drawn up for throughout the summer as well, with a medieval fair and a world record attempting involving The Slosh.
