TRIBUTES have been paid to a 20-year-old man who died after collapsing on the Nungate Bridge in Haddington last Friday.

Matt Watt was named by family on social media following the tragedy, which was witnessed by dozens of people.

Emergency services were called after Mr Watt fell ill as he walked over the bridge.

Residents rushed to his aid and blankets were provided by nearby businesses.

Mr Watt was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by ambulance but it was announced that he had passed away later in the day.

Mr Watt was a former North Berwick High School pupil.

Mum Mandy broke the sad news on Facebook later on Friday.

She said: “Sadly Matt passed away suddenly earlier today.

“He was loved very much and will be sadly missed.”

Tributes poured in as people expressed their shock at the sudden death.

On Facebook, his social media page was converted to a Remembering Matt Watt memorial page.

Jade Christie posted on the page: “Rest in Peace Matt Watt, truly one of the most genuine and funniest lads I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I’m totally speechless. . . rest easy buddy.”

And Dan Algeo added: “So sad to hear this. Matt was one of the good guys.

“My thoughts are with the whole family.”

James Ross commented: “This boy had a beautiful mind and made people believe amazing wonderful things about themselves.

“I will miss you man. Let’s bring peace to the world.”

Matt was crossing the Nungate Bridge shortly before 11am when he was seen falling to the ground.

A member of staff from the Waterside Bistro restaurant said people tried to help and they brought out blankets.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in East Lothian attended at the Nungate Bridge in Haddington at around 10.45am on Friday, March 2, following reports of a man having taken unwell.

“The 20-year-old was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he sadly passed away.

“This death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
