PLANS for housing on land beside a Haddington hospital, which were lodged more than a decade ago, look set to be scrapped.

Outline planning permission was given in 2007 for a residential development between Herdmanflat Hospital and Lydgait.

Since then, the proposals have not progressed to a more detailed stage, with work never getting under way.

Documents for the scheme, which was submitted by Lothian Primary Care NHS Trust, show plans for 66 properties, made up of detached and semi-detached homes and flats.

Access would have come from Aberlady Road, at the junction with Baird Terrace, with a new roundabout being created.

However, a spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said that a new planning application applying for the discharge of a planning obligation on planning permission meant the proposals were being scrapped and any new plans would start from scratch.

Meanwhile, the future for Herdmanflat Hospital remains unclear, with work under way less than a mile away for the new East Lothian Community Hospital, on the site of Roodlands Hospital.

Iain Graham, director of Capital Planning and Projects, NHS Lothian, said: “NHS Lothian and East Lothian Council are currently reviewing options for the use of the Herdmanflat Hospital site as a result of starting work on the new East Lothian Community Hospital.”
