THE oldest football trophy in the world has stopped off at the John Gray Centre, Haddington.

Members of the Haddington Active Memories group were presented with the Scottish Cup last Tuesday morning.

The trophy, currently held by Hibs, is the oldest in world football, dating back more than 140 years.

Michael White, of Alzheimer Scotland, was able to tell those in attendance all about the trophy, which was first won by Queen’s Park in 1874 in front of 2,500 people at Hampden Park.

The Active Memories group meets in the John Gray Centre every Tuesday morning for a chat and a pie.

Madeleine Hewlett, who works in the John Gray Centre’s library, said: “It was really successful and the men really enjoyed it. We had a reminisce session first and spoke about football legends and some movie stars and then A Question of Sport. Then the men got the chance to look at the cup.

“The club has a fair few Hibs fans but equally a few Hearts fans as well.”
