George Angus, a well-known Haddington photographer and local historian, died recently at the age of 91.

George’s slide shows of Haddington Old and New were for many years a popular feature during Haddington’s festival week.

Born in Alderston Lodge, he was the oldest of three brothers and, after becoming an air force cadet, he joined the RAF.

He served in England before going to Canada as part of the Commonwealth Air Training Scheme.

At the end of the war he served in Palestine and the Gulf.

George returned to Haddington and trained as an architect at Edinburgh College of Art and, in 1954, he married local girl Margaret Blair.

He rejoined the RAF as a navigator on transport planes.

His overseas postings included Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, where his daughters Shona and Aline were born.

On returning to civilian life, George was employed by Lothian Regional Council as an architect.

He also served as the architect for Holy Trinity Church as well as singing in the church choir – this led to him becoming a member of Hadley Court Singers for many years.

The choir appeared on TV when they reached the final of a national choir competition.

Being a keen photographer, George was a long-time member of Haddington Camera Club as well as Haddington History Society.

Two books of his Haddington ‘old and new’ photographers were published.

In all, his collection of slides numbered 6,000, and the family is donating these to the local history archive at Haddington Library.

A popular, well-liked figure, George was well known in his own town.

This was shown in the large congregation at the thanksgiving service for his life in Holy Trinity Church on Saturday.

George is survived by his wife, two daughters, two grandchildren and his brother.
