A SCOTTISH Terrier from Dunbar who won the nation’s hearts is set to return to our screens next month.

Hamish was one of the 40 lucky dogs acting as Team Name Bearers during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year.

Now, the nine-year-old is going to be back on the small screen as part of STV Children’s Appeal.

Dozens of cyclists will start off from Glasgow Green and pedal across Scotland’s Central Belt to Murrayfield Stadium, in Edinburgh.

Among them will be three generations of the Chisholm family from Dunbar: Reg, Barry and Aaron, along with Hamish.

Barry, 41, said: “It was my son’s [Aaron] idea to take part.

“He saw it on TV and he said we could do it with Hamish.

“We’ve also got my dad [Reg] doing it as well.

“It started a few months ago with me cycling to work and then taking it a bit further, cycling 20 or 30 miles at weekends – all in aid of keeping fit.” Barry then got in touch with Pedal for Scotland to check it was alright if they were joined by their nine-year-old pet.

He said: “When they found out Hamish was ‘Hamish’ they jumped on it and we are going to be featuring on the STV show.

“We’re going to be on the start line with Mark Beaumont [a record-breaking long-distance British cyclist, adventurer, broadcaster and author] and Sean Batty [STV weatherman] for the start of the cycle.

“Hamish has been kept busy since the Commonwealth Games and we have done some public appearances and photoshoots.

“We thought things would have died down but it has kept going.” Already, Barry has set himself the target of raising £1,000 for the charity.

One in five children in Scotland (about 220,000) lives in poverty.

The STV Children’s Appeal is aiming to make a difference in children’s lives by ensuring they don’t go hungry, have a bed of their own to sleep in and have clothes suitable for winter. In the first four years, the appeal has raised more than £8.2 million, which has allowed the charity to make almost 300 grants to each of Scotland’s local authorities.

Keith Irving, chief executive of event organiser Cycling Scotland, said: “Since the Commonwealth Games, Hamish has become a household name.

“We are excited to have him and three generations of his family on board to fly the flag for this fun and sociable charity event.

“It goes to show that this event really is for anyone!” To make a donation towards the team, go to www.justgiving.com/TeamHamish
