AN ATTEMPT to make a popular spot at Dunbar Harbour more accessible is being considered by East Lothian Council.

The town’s harbour trust submitted a planning application earlier this summer for improvements to the site of Robert Wilson’s Propeller at Victoria Harbour.

The landscape improvements aim to make the site more accessible and have been designed by Edinburgh landscape architects rankinfraser in consultation with Dunbar Harbour Trust (DHT) and local residents.

Steven Anderson, one of the DHT directors, noted that an original proposal was produced a number of years ago.

The new design has been adapted after a number of meetings with residents and members of the fishing community.

He said: “The trust invited a group of residents in the houses near the propeller site to comment on the proposals and we were delighted to take on board their ideas and adapt the designs to reflect their thoughts.” Comments included handrails to the steps from the harbour side to improve access to the propeller and the introduction of more bins if additional seating was provided.

Mr Anderson added: “We are delighted to reach this milestone on an exciting harbour improvement project.

“With the generous support of Viridor Credits in Scotland, we can begin to implement this new seating area overlooking Victoria Harbour.” If planning permission is given, it is hoped work will start on the site later this year and be complete for next spring.

The scheme, part of the Viridor Legacy:Scotland award to improve the Battery, is one of a number of mini-projects identified by DHT to improve the historic features around the harbour area.

Others include the entrance to the Vaults, seating on the North Wall and the setting around the Fishermen’s Monument.
