CONCERNS about the prospect of youth shelters being built near a Dunbar street have been raised at a community meeting.

Discussions about the shelters, which would give local teenagers somewhere to go and could be created in an attempt to get youngsters off High Street and surrounding vennels, took place earlier this year.

Four potential locations were identified but the idea of a youth shelter near Countess Crescent did not go down well at the town’s Community and Police Partnership (CAPP) earlier this month.

One man attended the meeting on behalf of “several local residents who were not confident to come on their own”.

Earlier this year, four potential locations – in front of the town’s swimming pool, near the Bleachingfield Centre, towards Friarscroft, and Parsonspool – were suggested for a youth shelter.

However, the man told the meeting that residents were not a fan of the idea of a youth shelter being created near the Bleachingfield Centre.

He said: “If that is going to happen, there are going to be a lot of angry people.” Constable Gavin Ross was the man behind the proposals and stressed they were trying to move issues away from High Street.

He stressed: “It’s an idea that is still a runner but in terms of location, there has been no thought beyond this table.” Members of the public would be asked for their views on any location and funding would need to be identified before the scheme progressed beyond the drawing board, he added.

PC Ross confirmed the best location would be somewhere where there was “minimal impact”.
