AN EVENT to raise awareness of dementia in Dunbar could become an annual fixture after the organisers declared it a success.

Dementia Friendly Dunbar held an awareness day in the Bleachingfield Centre last month. More than 30 representatives from a variety of different organisations – from the emergency services to health care and solicitors – were on hand to offer their expertise.

Pippa Swan, who was instrumental in setting up the Dementia Friendly group, said: “We had, as part of the event, the talking wall, which lets people express their views about how they felt about the impact dementia had on them and their families.

“It was to try to identify what would make things easier. That is being collated in the next couple of weeks and we will circulate a synopsis as to what the sentiments were.” About 100 visitors passed through the doors of the Countess Crescent venue during the three-hour session.

Mrs Swan added: “The event was brilliant. It was really, really good and we had more than 30 contributors and about 50 individuals from the contributors.” Dementia Friendly East Lothian was formed last year and has since spread to include smaller groups in a variety of the towns and villages. The future direction of the Dunbar group is yet to be decided, with the first meeting since the awareness day yet to be organised.

However, Mrs Swan was confident that another awareness day was likely to form part of the group’s future.

She said: “The client group changes every week, every month, every year.

“Now, we have done it once and it should make it much more straight forward to organise it again.”
