A NUMBER of Dunbar’s most famous sons and daughters are to have streets named in their honour at the latest Hallhill development.

Rev James Kirk, Molly Keith and Violet Kirkwood are to be recognised in the new housing schemes.

Street names such as James Kirk Way, Molly Keith Place and Kirkwood Crescent, have been put forward by the town’s community council to East Lothian Council and will almost certainly be adopted.

Stephen Bunyan, chairman of the town’s community council, felt it was important to highlight those who had been involved in the town centuries before.

The Rev Kirk was minister at Dunbar Parish Church but died from wounds suffered during the First World War.

Molly Keith was a founding member of the community council and a vigorous promoter of swimming and the town’s day centre.

While Violet Kirkwood was the only lady Provost in the Dunbar Burgh Council.

Other street name suggestions include Yosemite Park, a nod to John Muir’s role in the founding of the United States of America’s national park system.

Meanwhile, John Muir’s connection will also be felt in Meaford Avenue.

Muir, who was born in Dunbar, lived in the Canadian town.

Meaford is also twinned with Dunbar as is Narni, which will be referenced in Narni Way, and Marquette, which will be highlighted in Marquette Place.

Councillor Norman Hampshire, the local authority spokesman for housing and environment, felt it was appropriate for new streets to have a link to the town.

He said: “It’s a nice touch.I think the work these people have done within the community it is good to recognise them for that.

“It is a good tribute to them and their families that they have been recognised in this way.”
