THE family of a teenager killed in a road crash nearly one year ago have handed over a cheque for £1,000 to a double-world-record holder.

David Armstrong was killed alongside his friends Jenna Barbour and Josh Stewart on November 25 on Limetree Walk, near Tyninghame.

Since then, the 15-year-old’s family and friends have raised thousands of pounds through a special football tournament and then a musical event.

The teenager’s mum, Andrea, and younger sister, Gemma, were on hand to present a cheque from the David Armstrong Memorial Fund to young athlete Maria Lyle at Hallhill, Dunbar, on Saturday.

Andrea explained why they picked sprinter Maria, who struck double gold at the European Paralympic Championships in Swansea in August.

She told the Courier: “It was, to start with, about how much Susan [Maria’s mum] helped David – she was his PE teacher at Dunbar Primary School – and she always said he would go far with his gymnastics.

“So I was looking through photos and it made me think of Maria.

“She is incredible at what she does but she just doesn’t get enough credit, so I thought what better way [to donate the money]?” Andrea highlighted her son’s sporting prowess and said he could turn his hand to any sport, from gymnastics and cross-country to BMX riding and football.

She added: “The David Armstrong Memorial Fund helps keep my son David’s memory alive but also helps make a difference to others in our local community, so once again, thank you to everyone for their support.” Maria’s dad, Raymond, thanked the family for their generosity.

He said: “Obviously, given the circumstances of the donation, it is a difficult one because my wife Susan knew David and, being a teacher at the school, it is tinged with sadness and compassion for his family.” Raymond said David’s memory would live on through Maria’s efforts on the track and help spur her on to achieve her goals, while his wife described David as “a budding sportsman” in his own right.

Raymond told the Courier the money was not earmarked for one particular cause but would help in terms of training.

He added: “Maria is in to her winter training and her coach lives down in Lancashire.

“She is travelling up and down to see him every two to three weeks.

“In order for her to get the results, it means a lot of effort from a lot of people and this helps her a lot.”
