AN RNLI volunteer from Dunbar is getting ready to lace up her running shoes to raise money for the charity.

Rebecca Miller works for the charity as an educational presenter across the county and also volunteers in the RNLI’s shop on Dunbar High Street one day a week.

Having completed the Edinburgh and Milton Keynes marathons, she is now getting ready to join 55,000 others on the starting line at the Bupa Great North Run.

The international event regularly attracts thousands lining the streets of the 13-mile course, between Newcastle and South Shields, with millions watching on television at home.

Rebecca said: “I’m a keen runner and do lots of running already.

“I’ve done marathons and half marathons and I’m supporting the RNLI because it is close to my heart.

“I work for them in East Lothian and in the shop on the High Street as well.” Rebecca, who also volunteered in welcoming and greeting people during the Commonwealth Games diving at Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool, has already had plenty of company on training runs, including from her labrador, Marmite.

The 43-year-old said: “I’ve had a lot of support from friends in the county who have come out on the bike or running.

“The Great North Run will be a challenge because it is such a big event.” Rebecca has set herself a fundraising target of £500 and is already about halfway there.

She explained just why the RNLI was such a worthy cause, saying: “I’ve been involved for a couple of years and I go out to talk to children and adults about sea safety.

“Some of the events I have been involved in include resilience training for children and getting them to think about when they are around water and how to stay safe.” Rebecca, from the town’s Countess Avenue, has also given presentations to local Probus groups in a bid to highlight the work of the RNLI.
