MORE than 30 Dunbars are set to descend upon... Dunbar!

Members of the Clan Dunbar will travel from across the globe, including the United States of America and Australia, for a tour of Scotland.

The Clan Dunbar will arrive on Scottish shores on August 15 and see much of the country over the next 11 days.

One of the first stops will see the 35-plus members visit East Lothian.

The group’s itinerary states: “This morning (August 17) we will discover Dunbar on the North Sea coast of East Lothian.

“Its broad high street boasts several grand old stone buildings, including the birthplace of John Muir, the explorer and nationalist who created the National Park system in the USA.

“We will visit Dunbar Castle, the remnants of one of the most mighty fortresses in Scotland.

“The castle is located in a picturesque spot, overlooking Dunbar Harbour, and we will have the chance to explore the castle grounds up close.

“We will then leave Dunbar and travel a short distance to look at Spott House, the residence of Sir Patrick Dunbar of Wester Spott.” From there, they will head on to Mordington, in the Scottish Borders, to visit the grave of Black Agnes Randolph Dunbar, which is not open to the public.

Visits to Berwick-upon-Tweed and Duns Castle, which was briefly in the possession of Patrick, Earl of Dunbar, will also be ticked off before returning to East Lothian.

If time allows, they plan to visit the bell tower of the monastery founded by the Earl of Dunbar.

Further visits to the Black Isle, Ackergill Tower and Fort William are also on the itinerary before returning home on August 26.

The Rev Philip Craig Dunbar, the man behind the trip, said: “About every five years, the clan society visits Scotland, the land of our forebears, to refresh our association with the land and people. “We plan to visit with some of the Dunbars who are resident there as well.

“I am the newly elected chieftain of Clan Dunbar, having been elected last July.

“Sir James Dunbar, 14th Baronet, Chief of the Name and Arms of Dunbar, will be travelling with us.”
