A PETITION with more than 1,700 signatures calling for something to be done to help Dunbar’s fishing fleet has been handed over to a Scottish Minister.

Members of the Dunbar Fishermen’s Association (DFA) attended the Inshore Fishermen’s Group annual conference in Perth at the end of last month.

Peter Johnstone and Barry Brunton, from the DFA, were among those presenting the petition to Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment.

The DFA has repeatedly called for what it describes as “a fair deal” for the harbour users, with concerns over mooring costs and planned projects.

Mr Lochhead said: “I was pleased to meet with the Dunbar Fishermen’s Association to discuss this issue.

“It is important that fishermen have a role in the future of the harbour, which affects their livelihood.

“While this is largely a local issue, I have given a commitment to look at what role Ministers could have in finding a resolution.” Mr Johnstone described the support in Perth as “absolutely fantastic” and was pleased with Mr Lochhead’s response.

At the same time, the DFA is hopeful of meeting with Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond when he visits the town next Monday (April 21) for the official launch of the John Muir Way.

Mr Lochhead is planning to discuss the issue with the Transport Minister before getting back in touch with the fishermen.

Mr Johnstone added: “Richard Lochhead was very good about everything and realised what was happening at the harbour.” He said the DFA had also received backing from the Scottish Fisherman’s Federation, which, according to Mr Johnstone, had vowed to write to Mr Salmond.
