School funds local charity, as head gets set for retirement

A SPRING fair at Belhaven Hill School raised an impressive £2,900 for local and international causes.

A raffle, cafe, tombola and stalls were available at the event held in the school"s sports hall, with all proceeds divided between Belhaven Hospital and the Pipar Project – a pioneering wildlife conservation project in Nepal.

Pupils from the school presented a cheque for £1,450 to Belhaven Hospital on Monday. With children from the school council was headmaster Michael Osborne, who is due to retire this summer after 22 years in the post.

The 64-year-old first attended the school as a boy in 1952, then achieved an MA in Classics and Mathematics from Cambridge University, before returning to the school to teach between 1973 and 1981.

After running his own business in Edinburgh, Mr Osborne again returned six years later, and has been headteacher ever since.

'It"s been quite a long time, and I"ve really been associated with the school for about 36 years,' he said.

'My plan is to take a gap year and see the world after the school term has ended but nothing is set in stone as yet.'
