COMPLAINTS have been passed to East Lothian Council after a section of Dunbar High Street was left looking “rubbish” after work was carried out.

BT’s Openreach started work on the busy street to allow for the expansion of fibre broadband services on Sunday.

But the state the road has been left in has been criticised by Steven Hill, former chairman of Dunbar Trades’ Association, who said: “They cut a big trench down the street last weekend to lay fibre optic cable, which is great.

“There is still a bunch of stones there and at least three bits look like caving in already. It is going to keep deteriorating.

“If that is their finished product, even temporarily having a bunch of debris and small stones on High Street is a disaster. Folk’s tyres could kick them up and damage other cars and it looks rubbish.”

A spokesman for Openreach confirmed they would return to Dunbar this Sunday to complete the work.

He said: “Our contractors began roadworks associated with the expansion of fibre broadband services on Dunbar High Street at the weekend.

“We agreed with East Lothian Council that to minimise disruption the works would only take place on Sundays from 9am to 4.30pm. Our contractors plan to return this weekend to complete the works and address any outstanding issues. We’re sorry for any inconvenience meantime.”

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council confirmed that a road inspector had examined the condition of the road and would report back.

She said: “There is phased work being carried out at High Street for new cabling by Openreach.

“The council’s road inspectors work closely with contractors to ensure works are carried out within approved timescales and to a suitable standard.

“Following concerns raised, an inspector is visiting this site to check on the work.”
