A TINY dog has been reunited with his owner. . . after more three weeks on the loose.

Belle was captured by the Scottish SPCA at Belhaven Caravan Park, 22 days after escaping from Tommy Yorkston’s garden on Countess Avenue, Dunbar.

The Jack Russell has been given the once-over by vets and, incredibly, appears to have come through her ordeal unscathed.

Tommy’s daughter Karen said: “The vet cannot believe how remarkably well she is.

“She has never missed a dinner, they think she is about three years old, her teeth are perfect, she has beautiful eyes; her paws, pads, every thing is fine.

“The only thing we are going to get done is microchip her.”

Tommy had only had Belle for a matter of hours when she escaped from his back garden.

Karen added: “We have always had dogs and we lost our last dog a good few years ago.

“My mum was not very well at the time and my dad was caring for my mum. She passed away in August last year and my dad was looking for a wee bit of company.

“He is 82 and he must have put word out amongst his friends that he was looking for a dog.”

It is thought that Belle, who has become something of a star on social media, managed to climb a fence before jumping a wall and getting out of the garden. Since then, various sightings have been reported on Facebook, with regular posts saying she had been seen near Belhaven Caravan Park.

A cage was put down at the caravan park and within a matter of hours Belle, who has been nicknamed ‘Belle of Belhaven’, had been caught and reunited with her owner.

Karen, owner of Looks General Store on Summerfield Road, admitted they had feared the worst in the last few days, with a heavy blanket of snow and cold temperatures covering much of the county.

She said: “The last week, with The Beast from the East, we were saying we were going to find her and God knows what state she is going to be in. We knew she would not go to anybody but we were starting to fear the worst with the bad weather.”

Karen, who also lives in the town, had posted online that Belle had been found and within a matter of minutes there were hundreds of happy messages congratulating her and her dad.

She added: “Belle is grounded now – she is not going anywhere!”

Melissa Maitland, animal rescue officer with the Scottish SPCA, said: “We’re pleased we could reunite Belle with her owner after she had been on the run for three weeks.

“We were alerted after she was spotted in Belhaven Caravan Park and I was then able to set up a trap to catch her (see image above left).

“Belle was caught within two hours of setting the trap and we were able to get her safely home.

“She was still in good condition as she had been well fed by all the locals trying to get her home!”
