DOUBLE yellow lines are due to be introduced around a notorious road junction, following reports of several near misses involving vehicles.

The junction in Longniddry – leading to the Co-operative store and to other shops – is to have the permanent parking restrictions installed, according to East Lothian Council.

The move comes after Longniddry Community Council and residents raised concerns about incidents involving motorists and pedestrians trying to cross the main road of the village.

The double yellow lines will run down Links Road from its junction with Main Street, banning parking outside the Co-op shop, and as far down Elcho Road as the junction with Elcho Terrace.

They will also stretch along the opposite side of the road and cover the fork between Elcho Road and Links Road.

Those attending a meeting of Preston, Seton and Gosford Community and Police Partnership were told of concerns regarding motorists parking right up to the junction, the speed of traffic coming along Main Street, and safety.

One member said: “There have been a number of near misses as people try to come out or into the junction and with pedestrians trying to cross the main road.

“The parking is not helping these problems.” East Lothian Council said it had applied for and been given approval to restrict traffic in the roads.

A spokersperson said: “A Traffic Order was promoted and subsequently made to apply double yellow lines on Links Road/Elcho Road, Longniddry.”
