THE new headteacher of Humbie and Saltoun Primary Schools has swapped the north of England for life in the Garden County.

Sally Leighton took up her new role on Monday as the schools returned from their Easter break.

The former headteacher at St James Primary School, in Bolton, Greater Manchester, told the Courier she was settling in well.

Mrs Leighton, who grew up in West Sussex, replaces Lindy Lynn, who became headteacher at Macmerry Primary School in January.

The new headteacher said: “Each of my schools has helped me develop and grow as a leader giving me valuable experience to bring to the schools of Humbie and East Saltoun.

“I am passionate about my work and always strive to achieve my very best for the children.

“I am enthusiastic about Curriculum for Excellence and feel it echoes my own values of giving every child a chance to shine and preparing them for future life by fostering a love of life-long learning.

“I have been particularly struck by the beauty of East Lothian.

“As a keen cyclist, I am very much looking forward to exploring the country lanes and getting to know the local area on my bike during my leisure time.” Councillor Shamin Akhtar, council education spokeswoman, spoke about the appointment at this week’s education committee meeting and said members of the parent council were involved in the recruitment process, which had proved a success.

Fellow councillor David Berry was keen to see meetings set up with the relevant ward councillors whenever a new headteacher was appointed. He felt it was important that relations were formed early when a new headteacher was appointed.
