Volunteers of all ages have spent the last two weeks helping with an excavation at Dirleton Green.
The Dirleton Dig, organised in partnership with Gullane and Dirleton History Society, was part of East Lothian’s Archaeology and Local History Fortnight and attracted 400 visitors, 65 volunteer diggers and pupils from Dirleton Primary School.
An excavation of the medieval site last year found the remains of a building believed to date back to the 12th to 14th centuries.
There is evidence lime mortar was made on the site, but its previous use is still being investigated.
Among items so far uncovered are a butchered bone, household pottery, slate pencils, Victorian pennies, a silver four pence dating to 1843, bottle stoppers and old leather golf balls.
Andrew Robertson, East Lothian Council’s archaeology and heritage officer, said: “Community participation has been incredible, with people from all age groups flocking to Dirleton to help with the excavation.”
