PUPILS at Stenton Primary School are ‘monkeying around’ thanks to specially created playground equipment.

Locally sourced wood was converted into three pieces of play equipment, with the school’s pupils getting a ‘first go’ last Friday.

Suzanne Doggett, administration assistant at the school, which has a roll of just 20 pupils, said the youngsters were loving the latest additions.

She said: “It has been built by Robin Wood.

“He is a local artist and was involved at Pressmennan Woods with the [mythical creatures the] Glingbobs and Tootflits [whose homes are there]. We decided we wanted a trim trail and got various different quotes in. Robin had various original ideas and all the wood was sourced within a few miles of the school.

“The two uprights on the monkey bars are made from larch and the tree was thought to be 140 years old.

“Our school will be 140 years old next year and thought it was a nice coincidence.”

Robin, who has also provided a number of large-scale commissions for Woodland Trust Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo and the Dark Sky project in the Galloway Forest Park, began work on the original play equipment in June.

Then, from Wednesday to Friday last week, he installed the various pieces before the excited children got a first play.
