GARAGE owner Bob Bathgate is taking part in a gruelling 2,500-mile journey across 14 countries in a ‘blinged-up’ Hackney cab to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Bob, from Seton Engineering in Longniddry, is taking part in the Two Ball Rally, which was set to begin yesterday (Thursday) in St Omer, Fance.

And while the rally takes in six European countries over five days, his team and one other have extended their own charity trip into North Africa.

The additional challenge comes after Bob’s Team TerraClean crew won the European rally last year and decided to add an extra challenge this time around.

Along with two other mechanics from the Terraclean network and one of the directors of Randstad, who import and distribute Terraclean in the UK, Bob is going to travel in an old London taxi that has been built onto a Land Rover Discovery v8 automatic chassis. It has been built by the mechanics taking part in the rally over the past few months, with many of the parts donated by other garages in the Terraclean network.

The completed taxi was unveiled at the weekend at Haddington Rugby Club during RugbyForce day, when £73 was raised for the team’s fundraising efforts.

The rally starts in St Omer, travelling through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and Italy before finishing back in France in Nice on Monday.

That is the finish of the official rally but Bob’s team and one other have extended the trip into North Africa before returning home.
