AN INSPIRATIONAL video showing a 55-year-old man’s charity walk across the country is in with a chance of winning an international prize.

Norman Yarrow traversed the Southern Upland Way in April after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease nearly two years ago, the day after he celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with wife Carol.

Earlier this year, he decided to do something to raise money for Parkinson’s UK and The Cure Parkinson’s Trust.

Norman, from Gullane, covered the 215-mile route from Portpatrick to Cockburnspath in just 14 days and raised a staggering £314,638 – more than three times his original target.

His daughter Lucy and her boyfriend Andy created a video for the Virgin Money Competition, with the prize a trip to New York City.

The 90-second video flashes up a series of messages, as well as a picture of Norman, who works with NVM, a private equity company.

The video reads: “[The diagnosis] came as a complete shock to the whole family as I was still recovering from a lung operation earlier in the year.

“After coming to terms with the condition, I decided I wanted to do something about it, which led me to organise Norman’s Conquest.” Forty-five friends and family members set off from Scotland’s west coast and were joined by the odd celebrity guest, including television and radio personality Fred Macaulay and former Scottish rugby union legend Gavin Hastings.

The video then shows a series of photographs highlighting the journey across Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders and the variety of weather the walkers endured.

Entries had to be submitted by the end of last month, with judges now tasked with the hard job of picking a winner.

The video ends with: “I set out with an initial objective of raising £100,000 and it has been most humbling to date that we have raised over £314,000.” To view the video go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_CuWF8vjek&feature=youtu.be or to make a donation go to uk.virginmoneygiving.com/normanyarrow
