A PRIMARY school and nursery, which previously was noted as needing “additional support”, has received a glowing report from education inspectors.

A report in January from Education Scotland concerning West Barns Primary School and Nursery Class noted the school needed additional support and more time to make necessary improvements.

A follow-up inspection was carried out recently with Alasdair Eadie, HM Inspector, releasing his report on Tuesday morning.

His report states: “Across the school, children are now more confident in identifying what they want to learn and how they would like to do this through setting learning questions with their teachers and suggesting how they would like to learn.

“All children now have many more opportunities for active learning including a range of outdoor learning activities across the school year. Your school is now better informed about your children’s progress.

“The school and staff use a wider range of information more effectively. As a result, the school is now more confident that children are making appropriate progress from their prior levels of attainment.” The positive report means no further visits are planned in connection with the original inspection.

Councillor Shamin Akhtar, East Lothian Council’s Education and Children’s Wellbeing spokeswoman, said: “This is a really good follow-on report and testimony to the effort, dedication and enthusiasm of Mrs Whitford and her staff. West Barns provides a fine learning environment and is very well supported by its strong partnership with parents and the wider community. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the life of the school for this excellent inspection report.”
