A resident of a quiet village has told of the "terrifying" experience of seeing an armed police officer on top of a neighbour's garage roof.

Emergency services were called to Longniddry last night with more than half a dozen police cars attending an incident at Cotlands Park at about 5.45pm.

Other emergency services vehicles, including ambulances and fire engines, were seen on the street with officers remaining at the scene until late at night.

Pictures shared with the Courier show an officer on the rooftop holding a gun.

According to residents, he was speaking to a man who was said to have been holding a "sharp object" similar to a "kitchen knife".

Another resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Courier: "It was a terrifying experience, I have never seen anything like this in Longniddry, especially on such a quite road. Unfortunately, I do not know the person who lives there but I hope everyone is okay.

"We had just finished our dinner, looked out the window and we saw the fire engines, ambulances and everything else out there and they stayed outside until around 1pm.

"Seeing the policeman on top of the roof was very scary and we were told by a policeman, who came into to use our toilet, that the person had a weapon but it was not a hostage situation."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.45pm on Tuesday, 7 May, 2024 we were called to a report of concern for a person at a property on Cotlands Park in Longniddry.

“Officers attended and a man was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment.”

The police have confirmed that there was no hostage situation in regarding to this incident.
