Pupils at St Martin’s RC Primary School are to investigate how to improve their town.

The school is holding a ‘Tranent of the Future’ learning festival next Friday (May 10).

St Martin’s pupils are focusing on the local community and, in particular, Tranent High Street.

All children in Primary 1 to Primary 7 are learning about the importance of local organisations in providing for the needs of the local community.

Throughout the project, pupils will develop their skills in creativity, communicating and collaborating with others. Each class in the school has been for a walk along Tranent High Street to identify which shops are needed.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Sadly, we have seen a lot of shops going out of business and closing down in recent years, which has had a negative impact on our community.

“We have all had the opportunity to share our ideas about which shops we think Tranent High Street should have in the future.

“Each class has chosen a shop that they believe should be on the High Street.

“Over the next couple of weeks, we will be transforming the whole school into ‘Tranent of the Future’.”

Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, said that he would be keen to see what the pupils came up with.

He said: “I think this is a great idea. These kids are the future of Tranent and their ideas are very important to helping develop it.

“We want to create a High Street and a town for everyone to enjoy and their views are very valuable.

“I would be interested to see what they come up with once they are done with the project.”
