A MULTI-MILLION-POUND nursery will welcome children for the first time later this month.

Law Primary Nursery School, at North Berwick’s primary school, opens its door to youngsters next Monday (April 29).

The nursery has been based behind North Berwick Community Centre, on Law Road, since 1977.

Now youngsters are getting ready to move into a new purpose-built space next to the primary school.

The new venue will give children access to a wide range of high-quality spaces for learning and play, and better transition opportunities with the wider school community.

Councillor Fiona Dugdale, cabinet member for education and children’s and family services, was pleased to see progress being made.

She said: “This news will be welcomed by parents, carers and the whole Law Primary School community.

“Our staff teams have been working tirelessly on this project and we are all pleased to confirm the opening date to families.”

The £3.4 million construction contract was awarded to Messrs Hadden Group at the end of 2020.

Construction on the new facility began two years ago and has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and construction material shortages, causing the original timetable to be revised.

Council officers have worked closely with the nursery and school staff team and the Care Inspectorate throughout the process to update them on progress.

The final result is a modern, spacious and carefully designed facility that will cater for up to 240 youngsters over two sessions; currently, the nursery is registered for 90 children. Parents and carers are being invited to a series of drop-in events ahead of the opening.

Nursery staff will support children with the move and have planned a comprehensive transition programme for existing learners and children registered to join.

The nursery’s final day in its current home is next Friday (April 26).
