ROADWORKS due to start tonight (Monday) have been pushed back 24 hours due to poor weather.

BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, were due to begin essential surfacing improvements on three sections of the A1 this evening.

The project is scheduled to take place over 18 nights, running until May 1, between 7.30pm and 6am.

No work will take place on a Saturday or Sunday.

Works will take place from tomorrow to April 22 on the A1 Gladsmuir eastbound on-slip and Gladsmuir eastbound.

The A1 will be closed eastbound, and a signed diversion will be in place via Bankton junction.

It will follow the A198, B1377, A6137 and A199, rejoining at Abbotsview junction eastbound on-slip.

The diversion is expected to add nine minutes and 2.2 miles onto effected journeys.

Works are also due to take place from April 23 to May 1 on the A1 between the Bankton junction and Macmerry.

The A1 will be closed eastbound, and a signed diversion will be in place via the Bankton junction.

It will follow the A198, B1377, A6137 and A199, rejoining at Abbotsview junction eastbound on-slip.

The diversion is expected to add nine minutes and 2.2 miles onto effected journeys.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
