Residents at Tranent Day Centre have been benefitting from taking a trip down memory lane thanks to Radio Saltire.

Every week on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Radio Saltire presents its Golden Oldies show from Jim McGarvie at 11.30am, featuring songs from the past from all-time classics to hidden gems.

As part of the show, the station plays three songs chosen by members at Tranent Day Centre that bring back memories to them.

Members enjoy a dance and a sing along at the centre to some of their favourite songs.

Shona Sibley, entertainment co-ordinator at Tranent Day Centre, said the show has helped members benefit from physical activity and improved their moods.

She said: “One of our main focuses here at Tranent Day Centre is to promote gentle exercise, as an older adult, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can prevent or delay many of the health problems that seem to come with age.

“Exercise keeps muscles active, which improves balance and helps with their flexibility, it is also proven to improve brain activity. Singing boosts immunity and lung function, lowers stress levels and improves mental health.

“Jim McGarvie at Radio Saltire has a very big input in this factor by faithfully continuing to play requests for our clients at Tranent Day Centre.

“We collect requests from our clients every week and we are regularly approached for a song, that they particularly love to hear, to add to our list for the following week.

"By having their songs played on the radio, it appears to trigger their memories of the songs they once loved and danced to in their days gone by.

“The songs that they choose bring back so many happy memories of their younger years, they just love to dance and sing-a-long to their chosen song with everyone that is able to do so.

“Ever since the opportunity arose for our clients to have their very own requests played on the radio live, they have thrived immensely. This has most definitely highlighted the fact to us that this kind gesture, is very important in our elderly community.

“We would like and encourage the requests to continue, we cannot show and express our gratitude enough to Jim, he brings so much to Tranent Day Centre by doing this very small act of kindness and the delight that he brings to our clients is irreplaceable.”
