A BED bug ‘infestation’ is being tackled in Haddington after East Lothian Council called in pest controllers.

The creatures can hide in many places, including on bed frames, mattresses, clothing, furniture, behind pictures and under loose wallpaper.

Bed bug bites can be very itchy and there may also be painful swelling.

The issue was highlighted at a meeting of Haddington and District Community Council on Tuesday evening.

The following day, a spokesperson for East Lothian Council confirmed steps were being taken to tackle the issue.

They said: “Tenants who may experience any type of ‘pest infestation’ such as mice, wasps or bed bugs can contact the council as their landlord to request help.

“We use external pest control companies to attend such properties and put in place any measures to resolve the problem, which has recently been the case with bed bugs in a property in Haddington.”

As well as bites, signs of bed bugs, according to the NHS, can include spots of blood on bedding, from either bites or from squashing a bed bug; or small brown spots on bedding or furniture, “bed bug poo”.
