CONFIRMATION that £5 million will be invested in the Loch Centre in Tranent to refurbish the building and reopen the swimming pool has been welcomed by the town’s community council.

East Lothian Council announced that money had been set aside in this year’s budget for the refurbishment of the centre, with a view to having the pool open in three years, after its closure last January.

The pool was closed after issues were found with the centre’s roof.

Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, said news that the pool would be fixed was a “huge relief”.

He said: “I, along with the rest of the community council, am absolutely delighted with the news.

“It is a huge relief to know that work will be done with a timescale also set.

“There was a genuine worry in Tranent that this may not happen. It was a massive concern.

“Having the pool open is vital for Tranent and ensuring that it is done as soon as possible is also very important.

“We have a fantastic swimming club here in Tranent and they have been hindered by this closure. Hopefully now we will see them back in the pool as soon as possible.”

The pool’s closure has seen Tranent Amateur Swimming Club (TASC) forced to use pools in Musselburgh and Prestonpans to train.

Mr Falconer added: “I know this is a significant piece of investment, but it is a vital one. It is also pleasing to hear it is a full refurbishment that will improve the centre altogether.

“I know many people are concerned about The Brunton in Musselburgh and I hope, in time, that work can be done there too. But I think that is a far more complex situation.”
