An awards scheme to celebrate Prestonpans residents’ work in the community could be introduced.

The Pride of Prestonpans Good Citizen Awards idea was discussed by members of Prestonpans Community Council (PCC) at their last meeting.

Similar schemes already exist in other towns in the county, including Tranent and Dunbar.

A spokesperson for the community council said: “With so much bad news around, it is important to spotlight the work of people in the town who help to make life better for others.

“These unsung heroes often work, year in and year out, and do not seek any fuss to be made for their efforts.”

Exact details of the proposal are still to be formalised but it is hoped that a sub-group of four community council members will be formed to oversee the awards.

Nominations would be open to all, with entry available via the community council’s Facebook page.

Nominations would be reviewed by the sub group after a closing date, and invitations to attend a PCC meeting sent to winners, who would then be presented with certificates and vouchers.

PCC would allocate some of its budget to fund framed certificates plus gift vouchers, to be spent in local businesses, for the winners.

The group hopes to have the awards up and running next year.
