YOUNGSTERS in Aberlady ‘arrrrr’ looking forward to a new pirate-themed play park opening later this year.

Work to revamp the park, off The Pleasance, and get it shipshape started today (Wednesday).

It comes after a member of East Lothian Council’s amenities services team attended a school assembly in the village at the end of last year.

Pupils were offered the chance to pick their favourite design from a number of play companies.

A spokesperson for the local authority told the Courier that 129 children were able to cast their vote with 124 (96 per cent) choosing a pirate design.

A wooden pirate ship will be at the heart of the refurbished park, which will be closed for about six weeks while work is carried out.

The council spokesperson said: “The work will be undertaken by the council’s amenity services play squad.

“We purposefully held off the work to install the new play equipment until after the school summer holidays so as not to restrict play area use during the holidays.”
