A HOTEL in North Berwick has closed its doors followng the sudden departure of its licensee.

The County Hotel, run since 2016 by Tony Breathnach, has been shut since last Thursday.

The 10-bedroom High Street hotel, which also includes a bar and dining area, was leased to Mr Breathnach by Star Pubs & Bars, part of Heineken UK.

A spokeswoman for Star Pubs & Bars said: “The County Hotel is currently closed while we undertake compliance checks and any remedial worked needed.

“We are keen to reopen the pub at the earliest opportunity possible and look forward to welcoming customers back then.”

She added: “The licensee leaving is the reason for the closure and consequent compliance requirements.”

The Courier contacted with Mr Breathnach on Tuesday morning, but he declined to comment.

Claire Mackenzie, interim chairwoman of North Berwick Community Council, said: “We were surprised and saddened to hear of the sudden closure of the County Hotel.

“It’s always disappointing when a local business shuts for whatever reason.

“We know the hotel is loved by regulars and visitors alike, so we hope that a new tenant is found soon and that the doors open again.”

A North Berwick Business Association spokesperson said the group would discuss the closure of the venue at its next meeting.
