AN AMATEUR rugby player has been banned for two years after failing a drugs test following a game against an East Lothian team.

Tyrell Wilson, a Newton Stewart RFC player, has been handed the ban after he tested positive for methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) after a game against Haddington at Neilson Park in January.

Newton Stewart won the National League Division 3 match 20-31.

Wilson admitted the offence and was handed the ban by a three-person National Anti-Doping Panel.

Pat Myhill, director of operations at UK Anti-Doping, said: “While some recreational drugs may not particularly enhance sporting performance, there are still significant and valid reasons why they are named on WADA’s Prohibited List.

“Regardless of whether or not an athlete is deliberately intending to cheat, they are still solely responsible for any substances found in their system.”

Wilson is banned until January 12, 2020.
