LOOKING for ideas of what to do this weekend? Here's five events going on in and around East Lothian:

1. Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era

On Saturday, the classic big-band sound of the 1940s and 1950s is brought to Musselburgh, as the Nick Ross Orchestra stage the Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era at The Brunton.

The concert celebrates Glenn Miller, the legendary American big-band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era, and the Rat Pack.

With a full line-up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a rhythm section and special guest vocalist Sam Merrick, the Nick Ross Orchestra will recreate the sound of the big bands including those led by Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey and Syd Lawrence, featuring numbers such as Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, A String of Pearls, Little Brown Jug and American Patrol.

2. Flower shows

BEAUTIFUL blooms and more will be on show as Gifford, Oldhamstocks and Ormiston all host their annual flower shows at the weekend.

Gifford Horticultural Society celebrates its 170th anniversary at Gifford Flower Show on Saturday from 2pm and on Sunday from 9am at the village green.

Meanwhile, gardeners bakers and crafters have all been working hard ahead of Oldhamstocks Flower Show, which takes place on Saturday and is an open show, with all exhibitors welcome.

The show runs from 1pm to 5pm, with the presentation of prizes taking place at 1.30pm in the main marquee.

The Oldhamstocks Hill Race starts at 12.45pm.

Also on Saturday, Ormiston Horticultural Society hosts its show in the village hall, with the opening ceremony at 2.30pm.

3. The Reluctant Dragon

Quantum Theatre’s adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s The Reluctant Dragon – a tale of bravery, friendship and derring-do for all the family - is performed outdoors in Inveresk Lodge Gardens.

The show, which is suitable for anyone over the age of three, gets under way at 3pm on Saturday.

4. Archery fun

The Royal Company of Archers (RCA) head to Haddington on Saturday.

The RCA are taking part in the Haddington 700 events to mark 700 years of the town’s Bruce Charter.

At 10.30am there is an illustrated talk on the RCA’s history at the Aubigny Sports Centre on Mill Wynd. Then at 11am and 1.15pm there are archery demonstrations and children’s have-a-shot sessions at nearby Neilson Park.

5. Folk music

An East Lothian folk group is the latest act to take to the stage in St Mary's Parish Church in Haddington on Sunday.

Prior Engagement is made up of musicians from around the county and are joined by members of the Concessionaires, a local Scots trad music group.

The concert gets under way at 4pm.
