A MAN and a woman had to be cut free from a car following an accident on the A1 on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called out at about 2.10pm to the crash, which involved a car and a large goods vehicle.

Teams of firefighters from Dunbar, Duns, Haddington and Sighthill used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the man and woman, who were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

The vehicles were travelling westbound between the Spott and Thistly Cross roundabouts, with firefighters stepping down at about 3.45pm.

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed they were called out to an accident involving a Mini Cooper and a Renault Van.

He said: "The female driver and male passenger of the Cooper, aged 42 and 16, were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with non life-threatening injuries.

"The road was reopened around 5.50pm and the public are thanked for their patience during this time.

"A 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with this and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
