A FAMOUS old East Lothian football club is making a comeback after being kicked off again by local players.

The newly revived Wallyford Bluebell football team has already won the John Whyte Memorial Trophy, awarded to the champions of the five-a-side tournament hosted by Musselburgh Athletic Football Club at Olive Bank during the Musselburgh Festival.

Coach Rod Learmonth, who has been involved with Musselburgh Windsor Football Club, along with several of his ex-youth players from Wallyford, Musselburgh and Prestonpans, has restarted the new amateur team.

The team’s other coach is Chris Moffat, who used to play youth football for Musselburgh Windsor and, after a spell at St Johnstone, now plays for Dunbar United.

The pair are keen to find out more about the history of the Wallyford Bluebell club.

Mr Learmonth said: “We are reviving a famous old East Lothian side, Wallyford Bluebell FC.

“We have received lots of keen interest from people who once played for, or who have a member of their family who once played for, The Bluebell.

“Ideally, we are hoping to attract all ages to come along and support our revival of this old club. Similarly, we’re very keen for any Courier readers to get in touch with us to give us details of their time at The Bluebell.”

He added: “The majority of the current squad is made up from lads who have spent between five to 15 years playing youth football at Musselburgh Windsor.

“This band of brothers are excited at this new attempt to revive The Bluebell and would love to see some of the ex-players along to shout them on.

“We will be attempting to play all our home games at Wallyford playing fields, normally with a 2pm kick-off.

“So far we have played a few of the East Lothian sides in some friendlies and won every game.”

The team played its final friendly match of the season last Sunday, ending in a 2-2 draw against Easthouses.

A race night at Wallyford Miners Welfare Society & Social Club has already raised £1,000 for funds, with sponsorship for home and away strips coming from local businesses Michael Moffat of Platinum Plumbing and Heating Svs and Callum Innes Electrical Solutions.
