POLICE are to monitor a key road out of North Berwick after concerns were raised about speeding vehicles.

Cyclists and residents in the town have spoken to police officers about the speed of vehicles travelling along the B1347 between North Berwick and Kingston.

At a meeting of North Berwick Community Council earlier this month, PC Ian Paterson said: “We are aware of the issue and we’ll be keeping an eye on it.

“We’re waiting to hear back from our colleagues in road policing.”

NBCC member Sue Northrop mentioned reports made on Facebook of cyclists being forced to take evasive action as a result of speeding vehicles on the road.

PC Paterson acknowledged that the route had become busier with the completion of the housing developments at Mains Farm.

And he expects it to be busy this week, with thousands of golf fans set to descend on the area for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club, which finishes today (Sunday).

PC Paterson said: “It will be busy with golf fans and there will be a lot of officers about. The locals will have to think about their journeys because its is going to be a lot busier than normal.”

He added that the recent good weather may also have played a part, with motorists unfamiliar with the area visiting, adding: “In weather like this, people will just go out for a drive.”

Councillor Jane Henderson said she would take the issue up with the council’s roads team.
