A TWO-YEAR campaign to recognise Scotland’s greatest pilot has seen a statue created outside Edinburgh Airport.

Former pilots of the Edinburgh University Air Squadron, including George Robertson, vice-chairman of Dunbar Community Council, have been working to recognise the achievements of Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown.

With the financial support of many former squadron members, private individuals and donations, together with assistance from Edinburgh Airport Limited, a bronze statue of Mr Brown was unveiled outside the airport by HRH Prince Andrew earlier this month.

The statue – created by David Annand, who created the swan sculpture outside Dunbar Leisure Pool, unveiled 20 years ago – depicts him as a young pilot in 1920s-style flying gear striding towards his aircraft.

Mr Robertson, who was an RAF pilot for 17 years, highlighted the importance of Mr Brown and said: “He was right at the very forefront of the golden age of aircraft development.”

Mr Brown, who flew more different types of aircraft than anyone else in history, visited the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune in 2015 as part of the redevelopment of two hangars there.
