A HAMMER attack has landed a Prestonpans man in jail.

Alexander Manclark repeatedly struck Michael Cunningham with the tool after bursting into his home at Edenhall Bank in Musselburgh.

Manclark then robbed his victim of a mobile phone, various bank cards and cigarettes.

The 29-year-old attacker also made off with a TV licence card, a tobacco tin and two sets of keys during the incident on May 25 last year.

He appeared at court last month and admitted a series of offences, including the attack on Mr Cunningham.

Sheriff Frank Crowe told Manclark that he had no option but to send him to custody for the hammer attack and jailed him for 12 months.

Pleas of not guilty to entering Delta Road, Musselburgh, without permission on June 5 last year, giving police officers false details on June 28, and failing to appear at the city court on March 26 this year were all accepted by the Crown.

Manclark was also sentenced to eight months in prison after grabbing a canister of PAVA spray from a police officer and spraying it onto his head during a separate incident.

Manclark grabbed the police-issued spray from PC Graeme Woodhouse and discharged it over him before going on to kick the officer on the body during an incident at High Street, Edinburgh, earlier this year.

Manclark also sprayed second victim Joseph Murray with the PAVA spray during the incident.

He also resisted arrest from two constables by struggling violently with them and lashing out with his arms and legs.

The offences were committed after Manclark had been granted bail on seven previous occasions at the Capital court.

He appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last Wednesday, where he was sentenced to an eight-month prison sentence for the police assaults.

But Sheriff Crowe told the offender that both custodial sentences would run concurrently, meaning he will serve 12 months in total.
