A FORMER Tory leader has called for cannabis to be legalised after declaring the war against the drug "irreversibly lost".
The comments by Lord Hague came earlier today before the UK Government's Home Secretary announced a review of the use of the class b drug for medicinal purposes.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid insisted the ban on recreational use of cannabis would remain in place.
However Lord Hague said it was "deluded" to think cannabis could be driven off the street, adding the "battle is effectively over".
And he was quoted in the Telegraph today as claiming issuing orders to the police to stop people smoking cannabis were “about as up to date and relevant as asking the army to recover the empire”.
The issue of cannabis use in East Lothian was raised in a column by Courier reporter Marie Sharp two weeks ago.
